How To Select Subject In Photography – Part 1

Photography is an exciting hobby and pastime for many all around the world. So how to you begin and decide what to take photos of? Good question.

It may be helpful to think about where you are going or what you are doing and what shots you could take. For instance, if you are going to a family event, such as a birthday party, reunion, Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, for instance, then you are likely to have many opportunities to get some fantastic shots of family members. These types of photos are great to look back on in the future to trigger memories of good times together.

How about if you are going on a hike or camping trip? Then you will have opportunity for many different and varied photos. You may decide to take shots of people who are with you, but you will also be able to get photos of the landscape or animals or plants. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

With photography there are always have endless opportunities, but there are also some things to keep in mind. Firstly you will need to understand some basics of photography in order to maximize the variety and quality of the photos that you take. Photography is an art, so it is important to develop your skills, just as any painter or sculptor develops their skills in their particular field of art.

How do you go about selecting a subject for your photo? Knowing what to select as your subject comes to you as you do develop your photography skills and understand photography basics. As you begin to implement and take action using the basics then you will begin to find that you have an eye in the specific situation to find, select and setup the subject that you want to display in your photo.

Different photographers select varied topics and themes for their photos and hence varied subject types. For instance, if you love to take photos of animals or birds then you will need the equipment, patience and skills to not only locate these creatures, but also to frame the shots to best communicate the message that you desire to your audience.

If you prefer landscape photography then you will need to look for locations where you can find interesting landscapes to photograph. Depending where you live, your options for landscape photographs may be limited. If this is the case then perhaps your next vacation will give you more opportunities to make the most of your photographic skills in this area.

In each of the examples above, choosing your subject depends on many factors. You may be limited to what subjects you can select at any given point in time. But keep in mind that you can plan your future trips and outings to allow you to take the type of photos that you want.
